In a rural Chinese town right before the 2008 Olympics, Dan visits his estranged father. At the same time, stray dogs are being rounded up by the Government for public safety reasons.

Lily wakes up one night to discover her body enveloped with mysterious floral bruises. As Lily and her husband discuss this, we catch glimpses of her bleak existence in the high-rises, and the loneliness that permeates her existence.

Two children wake up in the middle of the night to find that their father is missing, and their TV is on. They decide to watch a cartoon while they wait for their father to come home.
